Passage

St Olaf College Center for Art and Dance; May 2022

Passage is the result of a series of intuitive, tactile conversations with the material. Inspired by the strength and adaptability of water and guided by a rejection of “fragility” in association with emotionality, this work began as an investigation of my own emotional fluidity within the boundless, contrasting personalities of water. The installation’s soundscape consists solely of layered and altered recordings of my voice. The fabric acts as a cradle, window, or barrier to the forms, guiding spectators through an exploration of the space. Contrasting the weight and permanence of stoneware, the moving and changeable elements of Passage embody the relationships between solid bodies and ephemeral forces. As water shapes land and carves arteries in rock, my own movements are preserved in the curves and contours of the fired clay. Each form documents its own evolution – the product of a transient journey, a chosen path, and an instinctive exchange of thought and feeling.
