Week 9 - Making Rocks

I titled my blog this because I made a lot of clay rocks this past week but I realize it has a double meaning. Making does rock (:

I spent some time on Monday going through the gravel outside the kiln yard with Jooby and we found some pretty incredible fossils and super cool rocks of various types — I should really try to research what some of them are, and if there’s a way to trace where exactly they’re from. I’m fascinated by their variety of textures and shapes. I started playing around with imprinting them and some shells that my mom collected for me (shoutout mom <3) on my little forms. I’m really thrilled by the results and feel silly for not thinking of trying this sooner. I’m looking to bring some of these elements into my functional work soon.

I started making some with the new Casey Beck stoneware I mixed last week. I’ve got more in my studio unphotographed. I’m trying to make as many as I can for my upcoming collab spacelab show, so that’s been the main focus lately, but am also making slow progress on my big sculpture — just nothing worth showing yet.

I spent a decent amount of time this week finishing the work from our makeathon and setting up for the Dirtbags holiday “Meet Your Maker” sale at Hermitage Farm, which happened this weekend! I wasn’t able to attend the actual sale, but it looked super fun and I’m eager to see the numbers.

And with the help of Brian, Jooby, Christopher, and Emma (shoutout!!!) successfully loaded my big piece into Big Bailey. Woohoo! Teamwork makes the dream work :)

Also wanted to include this pic of an insert in a real old Ceramics Monthly magazine in the studio library because I think it’s awesome.
