Week 8 - I Sculpted. That’s It.
Well, okay, I did some other things too. I attended an awesome demo/talk by Jeff Campana, volunteered at the Southern Crossings Pottery Festival and chatted with a few super cool potters, and unfortunately also slammed the tip of my pinkie in my car door.
I finished the two propriocepta I’ve been working on over the past few weeks and transferred them to shelves for the bisque, which I plan to fire off this coming Friday in time for the soda that I am firing over spring break with my stool and some dark claybody tests.
Jeff Campana’s demo was awesome; I’m really inspired by the way he problem solves throughout his mold-making process by inventing new 3d-printed objects. I also appreciated what he had to say about being on the right path with his artmaking— that if you’re making the work you’re meant to be making, you just know, and you also know when your current work is no longer true to your journey and needs to be pushed in a different direction. I had a good conversation with Jeff outside the studio while I was helping set up for Southern Crossings that has got my gears turning. He spoke about his own 3d-print designs for mechanisms to help pour and hold his big 300-lb molds in place while they are draining, and it made me consider 3d-printing wheels to help roll heavy sculptures on kiln shelves from the lift into the kiln without the need for extra hands.
Although I worked at my bar jobs during the actual Southern Crossings Pottery Festival nights and couldn’t attend, I’m glad I got to help with set up and meet some new potters and make some local connections. I spoke to the director of AA Clay Studio about potentially teaching lessons in the future/this summer, which is an exciting opportunity!
And I submitted some cups to another open call.
